Building Space For Intimacy

You ever felt that you were close to someone until you realized you were only scratching the surface?

Time was invested. Energy was given. Things exposed, maturity required, and yet… something happens that makes you realize your version of close was a lie.

Perhaps lie is a strong word. But your eyes were enlightened to realize that thankfully you moved past the stage of complacency because there was a whole new world for your heart to discover.

That’s how I felt in my closet, kneeling before God with a rushing feeling. All I could think was “if this is You, have I even known You at all?”

The truth is, I did know Him. He just opened a new level when I made the decision to be extremely vulnerable.

It reminded me of the moment I no longer needed an emotional word to catch a revelation. After all, He just is. Whether we “feel” Him or not, He’s there. That was a great moment in our relationship when I could move on to the meat of His Word.

But this. It almost had me second-guessing myself because the revelation hit so strong. That’s the beauty of fasting.

Fasting is uncomfortable.

Fasting is inconvenient.

Sometimes it’s downright frustrating.

But in the midst of my frustration, I didn’t pull back. I sought to go closer. Visions of chains breaking and strongholds no longer having their place in my life. It was as if the scales had been lifted. We were close but now we were intimate.

Un-forgiveness.

Shame.

Guilt.

Bad teaching.

These are a few things that can hold us back. However, vulnerability became the key to revealing a new perspective of His presence. I was still holding on to things before. Now, I was letting them go.

Have you fasted lately?

Do you feel you are completely vulnerable with God? Or do you hold back?

I encourage you, the next time it tugs in your heart, that you fast with the intention of focusing on God. Sometimes we have a habit of bringing our own agenda to Him for our fast. Instead, ask Him what does He need you to see about Him. What He reveals may surprise you. But it’s most definitely worth the quest.
