Presence over Performance

Once I get focused on something, I’m all in. Maybe not for a long time because I think I have undiagnosed ADHD but that’s a whole other story. However, when I get focused, whew! There’s no escape!

The problem is I get very focused on my tasks to the point that I get upset when I’m not marking things off my to-do list. Things are being added faster than they’re coming off. I make a new list so it looks cleaner and I get frustrated because I can never get ahead. There’s another thing. And another thing. And did you remember this?

And then, I finally made time to open my bible, well if we’re being honest it was a devotional, the scripture hit me upside my head. Luke 10:41-42 was live on the screen.

“But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

- Luke 10:41-42

This is one of those scriptures that we’ve overheard in church about Mary and Martha. But something about that day reminded me that I didn’t have to perform for God, that all the “things” I was focused on to accomplish my calling, purpose, and dreams were nowhere as important as being in His presence.

I had forgotten the art of resting in God. He convicted me. I knew I needed a change. He reminded me of my prayer corner. So I decided to add a time of prayer journaling. A time of being in God’s presence before I start my day and get super focused on my tasks at hand. Sometimes I don’t have the words to say to God but journaling helps make the words I really want to say flow from me to Him. If you’ve never done prayer journaling it’s very simple:

1 Grab a cute journal

2 Find a quiet comfy spot

3 Write to God, make it a letter if you need to, I love to start with “Hey God”, or “Good morning Father”. Let whatever is on your mind just sink onto the paper.

4 Ask Him any questions

5 Listen for an answer. Maybe you get it. Maybe you don’t get it immediately. If you so much as think something, just write it down.

Take the first 30 minutes to an hour of your day to start this way and watch it make all the difference. Gain more clarity. Have more direction. Add more peace. You’ll have a better understanding that it doesn’t all have to get done today, allow God to show you how to work smarter and give yourself grace. It’s the best thing on my schedule all day long and I’m sure it will be for you too. Allow the details of your day to become a whole lot simpler.
