Alive In His Word

Our experiences shape us. What we believe leads us. But the Word should be what molds us.

God has placed on my heart to get back to reading my Bible more. I started a year plan on my Bible app to help me through it. I did good for about a month, but NOW?! I’m all types of behind. Part of my problem is I don’t want to read it just to read it. Meaning, I need it to be more than a good mark on my to do list.

Or is that just a good excuse I tell myself?

I can be honest and say it’s an excuse, but it’s a real one. My mind floats and comes back. It’s a whole thing. But listen, I’m determined to become more focused in this season. Even the parts of God’s Word I may have read 100 times I want to be so surrendered that He has room to speak to me in a new way about it. Because, what’s the point of reading His Word if I’ve made up my mind what it means already?

We read His Word to grow.

To get closer.

To know God better.

To catch a revelation.

To have our world shifted.

To become alive in it.

I know for me, these are all good reasons to pick my Bible up daily. Let’s be honest, we don’t let our good excuses keep us from our favorite shows or miss important events. It’s time we lose the distractions and become disciplined in reading God’s Word. Let’s stop focusing on the reasons we’re not reading, focus on why we should. Afterall, everything we find ourselves needing, is there in our lap.

So how can we become more disciplined?

1.     Make it a part of your routine

2.     Make a decision. Stick to it, no matter how you feel

3.     Make it fun: read outside, at the coffee shop

4.     Pray! Ask God for the fire and motivation to read

5.     Have accountability with someone/a study group to keep you on track

Listen, I know it won’t be a cloud-9 experience every time I open my Bible. But learning the discipline to read and understand the Word no matter what’s going on will allow me to expect more.

What are you expecting as you open your Bible? No matter how long your relationship with God has been, return to that childlike spirit. Have the yearning to learn. Grasp the fire that wants to know more of Him and soaks it up like a sponge.

In a world that teeter totters on its opinion, God’s Word will always be true to who He is and who you are in Him. He is always faithful, so we should strive to be as well. Learn to sit before Him and allow His Word to make room in your heart. Everything will begin to be in order when we prioritize our relationship with God the right way. Happy Reading!
